“Live Oak Lineage: Wide Branches and Deep Roots in Family Trees of Creoles on the German Coast”

Katy Morlas Shannon will explore how the German-Acadian Coast, a place where families had members on both sides of the color line, transcended the boundaries of enslaved and free. She will focus on the families who acknowledged these connections, some ultimately freeing their enslaved relatives and marrying the formerly enslaved mothers of their children when legally allowed to do so after the Civil War.

“My Hébert Family History: Research, Writing and Publishing”

Liz was determined to find out the mystery of her great-grandfather Hébert always being referred to as an orphan. Her research to determine his origins unraveled a rich history of her Acadian ancestors. This curiosity led to her publishing a book! She will detail the entire process of researching, writing and publishing her family history. She will also share her favorite online sites while doing research in various areas such as Acadia, France, and Louisiana.

“A Slaveholding Church: The Bishops and Priests of Louisiana and the People they Held in Bondage”

In the face of conflicting teachings of the Catholic Church, it was not uncommon for bishops, priests and, religious orders to enslave people. Five bishops, and at least fifteen priests in Louisiana held numerous persons in bondage. During the last ten years, Emory has been researching in numerous archives to document these members of the clergy, to name the persons they held, and to begin tracing their descendants.
